And so, without further ado, let’s get inspired. Here are 10 simple DIYs for the home that you can try today!
01. Rope Bowls
When I wander through stores like Home Sense and Ikea I often find myself admiring pretty décor pieces like these rope bowls. I had no idea, not until recently anyway, that I could make them myself on my sewing machine. It’s Always Autumn has a great tutorial on how to make them; why don’t you give it a try?
02. Reusable Paper Towels or “Unpaper” Towels
If you’re looking for more ways to reduce your waste, these reusable or “unpaper” towels are a great project to try. This particular tutorial uses a serger to finish the towels and snap buttons to attach them. However, I know that flannel can stick together on its own (thanks, static electricity!) so you could make yourself some unpaper towels without snaps if you used a fabric that clings to itself. And if you don’t have a serger, or don’t want to pull it out, you could open for just using an overcast stitch around the fabric.
03. Hanging Dish Towels
Before I really got into sewing, I bought a bunch of these hanging dish towels from a local sewist. I hate going into my kitchen and finding that my dish towels have fallen off the oven handle. This solves that problem, keeping them nice and secure so they’re always where you need them to be. Now I can make my own! Check out this tutorial so that you can make your own too.
04. Plastic Bag Dispenser
This is another one of those things that I bought from a local sewist because I really wanted one and had no idea how to sew them. But you’re in luck—I’ve found a tutorial for you so that you can make one yourself instead of having to go out and buy one!
05. Face Cleaning Rounds
This cute, practical, and simple sewing project is something that anyone who washes their face can use. (Which means, I hope, everyone!) You can use whatever colors or patterns you want, which means they’d also be great as stocking stuffers, as a just-because gift, or as part of a larger gift for the holidays or a birthday. They’re small, washable—thus, reusable!—and oh so cute.
06. DIY Phone Charging Station
If you’re always trying to figure out where your phone is, why not give this phone charging station a try? It gets your phone up off the table or the floor, keeps your cords out of the way, and if you make it bright and colorful it’ll be easy to spot from across the room. It’s a great project to help make your home a bit more orderly.
07. Sewing Machine Mat
Sewing can be a bit chaotic. Scissors, pins, pens, fabrics, and more just… everywhere. (At least when I do it!) If you want to tame the chaos, why not make yourself a sewing machine mat? This would also make a great gift for someone new to sewing!
08. Door Draft Stopper
If your home is getting a little drafty, why not give this door stopper a try? It’s both simple and incredibly practical. Make it to match the colors you already utilize throughout your home and you’ll barely notice that it’s there!
09. Reusable Snack/Sandwich Bags
For those on a mission to waste less, these reusable snack/sandwich bags would be a great project to tackle. Particularly if you currently go through a lot of plastic zip bags. And don’t think you’re limited to using them for food—whatever you’d normally use zip bags for, you can replace them with these! Give it a try and see what you think.
10. Fabric Bins
I get teased all the time for having so many different bins and baskets, so it’s no surprise that this project is on the list. Look at how pretty these fabric baskets are! You could store so many different things in them. All those cords you have lying around, for example. Or keep one by the door to gather mitts, hats, and scarves in the winter. Whatever you might want to put in a basket, you can put in one of these fabric baskets. Give this project a try—you won’t regret it!
