For some people, mushrooms are autumn décor—but to me, mushrooms are an all-year kind of thing. There’s something so whimsical about them. Or, at least, when it comes to crafted mushrooms. (I possess a little less love for the natural kind.)
They’re great for fairy gardens and children’s rooms, along with more general household décor. Set them on your bookshelves, decorate your walls and your fridge, or settle them in your windows to bask in the sunlight. Make little clay mushrooms with faces, or mushroom lamps to add a little magic to your home.
If you’re ready to tackle some mushroom DIYs, this list has a little of everything. Clay mushrooms, 3D printed mushrooms, string art mushrooms, crochet mushrooms, and so on.
Make them on their own, or work them into larger projects. A lot of these little mushrooms would make excellent gifts, whether for a specific person in your life or as part of a Random Acts of Handmade project.
Let’s get crafting!
01. Simple Fabric Mushrooms
There’s nothing I like more than a simple, quick, inexpensive craft that also manages to look incredibly cute. And this fabric mushroom pattern is exactly that. These mushrooms would be so much fun to hide in random places for people to find!
02. Mushroom String Art Kit
I haven’t tried too many string art projects—I don’t think I have the focus for it!—but if string art is your thing, Knot Really Art on Etsy sells this adorable mushroom string art kit. Art kits are an excellent way to try new crafts because they come with everything you need and it’s easy to jump in. Will you give it a try?
03. Light Up Clay Mushrooms
These are stunning. Depending on the type of clay and lights you use, and how well you seal the finished project, I think these clay mushrooms would look amazing outside on the patio or next to an old tree. They’d definitely add a touch of whimsy to your outdoor space!
04. Cottage Core Mushroom Earrings
These would be perfect to wear to a Ren Faire (or just about any other day of your life)! I love how small they are and how they can be customized with a variety of colors or types of mushrooms. Make a matching pair for your best friend. Out with friendship rings, and in with friendship earrings!
05. Felt Mushroom Ornaments
I think these are adorable. They’d look fabulous on a whimsical, woodland-themed Christmas tree—but of course, you can use ornaments for more than just Christmas! Add them to a baby mobile, add some essential oil and hang one in your car, or leave them in random places to be found.
06. Polymer Clay Mushroom Bookmarks
If you’re a book lover you’re sure to enjoy this mushroom DIY project. This adorable bookmark would make a great teacher gift or stocking stuffer! Or just make it for yourself, because you deserve a little gift too!
07. Mushroom Shadowbox Project
This would be a perfect project for those of you with a Cricut or Silhouette machine. Mix up the colors and frame it. This would be great wall art for a woodland-themed nursery, or to add a little whimsy to your office. Plus, if you have a Creative Fabrica subscription you can download the cut files for free!
08. Felt Mushrooms
Here’s another felt mushroom pattern, this one using more natural colors and shapes. Again, these would make great décor. You could also fill them with catnip to make cat toys, or make a cute wall hanging by stringing a bunch of them together.
09. Crochet Mushrooms
Don’t worry, crochet fans, this one is for you! This adorable crochet pattern will make the cutest little mushrooms. Sew them onto a bag or a sweater to add a little cottage core style to something dull.
10. Clay Mushrooms
I seriously love these clay mushrooms. Everything about them, really, from the colors to the style of them. These would make great ornaments, wall art, pendants, and more. It really just depends on how big or small you make them! You could even make some mini ones and turn them into pencil toppers!
11. Velvet Mushrooms
These velvet mushrooms have such a unique look to them. They’re so pretty, and simple enough to make. Add some to a flower bouquet (fabric flowers would be best) or let them be the main attraction. Wherever you put them, I’m sure they’ll look fabulous.
12. Mushroom Crescent Moon Wreath
This is such a great tutorial because not only does it show you how to make some of the cutest mushrooms, but it incorporates them into a larger project. In this case, a beautiful crescent moon wreath. This project is definitely worth giving a try!
13. 3D Printed Mushrooms
If you have access to a 3D printer this is another fun project to try. Print them, paint them, and add magnets. You will have the coolest fridge around.
14. Book Page Mushrooms
I love using old book pages to make new art. These book page mushrooms are too cute, and they can be made with dollar store or thrift store books. If you’re going to work with used books, particularly when the title doesn’t matter, I highly recommend looking for the most beat-up books you can find. Ones that other people probably won’t take home to enjoy. That way you save them from just being thrown out when no one buys them. It’s a win-win situation!
15. Hot Glue Mushroom Lights
This lovely mushroom display uses string lights, hot glue, some moss, and an enclosed display container to make one of the prettiest crafts I’ve seen in a while. Plus, if you’re looking for a budget DIY this is a great project to try—the glue, string lights, moss, and display container can all be found at Dollar Tree! So there’s really no excuse not to give it a try.
Which of these mushroom DIYs is your favorite?
I absolutely love all things quirky and eclectic—and these mushroom DIYs are definitely both of those things! I think I need to make some mushroom décor for my apartment and add a little whimsy to my space.
