I love fall. The pretty colors and the cooler temperatures are a welcome change after the heat and dryness of summer.
The autumn season is full of stunning décor, but for some, it is a meaningful time of self-reflection. For those who celebrate the Fall Equinox and/or Mabon, this time of year is about thankfulness and gratitude, balance, and reaping the fruits of our labors.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the fall equinox occurs around September 22nd or 23rd (it is on September 22nd in 2024).
If you celebrate the fall equinox and/or Mabon, there are plenty of DIY projects perfect for the season. I’ve compiled a list of 15 of these projects for you. Let’s get into them!
15 Fall Equinox and Mabon DIY Projects to Celebrate the Change of Season
01. Corn Husk Doll
According to Magical Crafting, “Traditionally, the spirit of the grain lives in the fields with the crops. And so it is that once all the crops are brought in, she no longer has a home. And so we use the last sheaves that were reaped, to make a corn dolly to embody and honor her spirit. I will keep her warm and safe in a place of honor in my home all winter.” If you are also inspired to keep the spirit of the grain in a place of honor, try this tutorial and make a doll of your own.
02. Mabon Loose Incense
Like me, you may be accustomed to using incense sticks for your incense needs. But it’s not the only option! Loose incense serves the same purpose as incense sticks, but it’s much, much prettier.
03. Fall Garland for Mabon/Fall Equinox
This fall garland is a beautiful way to honor the changing seasons and it comes together without much difficulty. You can use it indoors or outdoors, and because everything it calls for is biodegradable (provided you don’t coat the leaves with anything before stringing them) you can bury it and give it back to the earth when you’re done with it.
04. Autumn Leaf Trinket Dish
Although this dish doesn’t use any actual leaves, it’s a lovely little homage to the beauty of autumn leaves. You can make several of these trays and give them as gifts. They’re also great to set a little tealight candle in or as a trinket dish.
05. Fall Banner with Book Page Leaves
I absolutely love any and all things bookish, so I think this is an especially fun addition to the list. Pick up some used books at the thrift store, some fake leaves at the dollar store or on Amazon, and get crafting!
06. Harvest Moon Abundance Spell Sachets
These beautiful little spell sachets are a great project for focusing your intentions on abundance, prosperity, and success. The harvest season is all about reaping the fruits of your labors; amplify this energy with these spell sachets.
07. Witch Broom/Besom
Witches brooms are traditionally used for cleaning and purifying. (You know, just like a regular broom.) They’re beautiful pieces of décor, and you can make small ones specifically for cleaning altar space and other ritual uses. Why not make a ritual broom for each season?
08. Fall Bath Bombs
Don’t forget to take time for self-care during the fall equinox! This is a great time to reflect on the work you’ve done so far and emotionally prepare for the changing of seasons. Autumn brings with it its own challenges; make sure you’re ready to tackle them.
09. Fall Split Wood Bead Wreath
This garland is a fun project that’s sure to add some fall vibes to your space. It’s also customizable; use flowers and plants that speak to you or resonate with your goals and intentions.
10. Cinnamon Broom Wreath Décor
Like the witch broom above, this cinnamon broom “wreath” (admittedly, it doesn’t really look like a wreath to me) is a beautiful décor piece celebrating autumn and can be utilized in honoring the fall equinox. As cinnamon is used in all sorts of wealth and abundance workings, it’s a fantastic material to use in relation to harvest season.
11. Marble Acorn Pendants
These marble acorn pendants are such a cute way to craft with all those acorn tops you can find on the ground in the fall. You can turn them into pendants like the tutorial shows, but you can also make a bunch and add them to a mobile, garland, or other piece of fall-themed décor. If you used something in place of the marbles, like translucent clay, you could even make earrings!
12. Autumn Forest Crown
Do you need this autumn forest crown? Maybe not. Do you deserve it? Absolutely. This beautiful DIY needs no justification because regardless of whether you have a “use” for it, you’ll definitely want to have one now that you’ve seen it!
13. Cinnamon Stick Wreath
This simple wreath is a great piece of autumn décor. Cinnamon and abundance go hand in hand—don’t forget to blow cinnamon into your home on the first of each month!—which makes it perfect for the fall equinox, Mabon, and harvest time. Bring in all the abundance you’ve been working towards with this beautiful wreath.
14. DIY Acorns
These cute acorns are a fabulous way to use up those old plastic easter eggs you have lying around from the spring. This would also work with wooden easter eggs and even Styrofoam ones! And if you have none of the above, make yourself some egg shapes with air-dry clay to use for this DIY. You really have no excuse not to make it.
15. Dried Orange Garland
This simple, but oh-so-pretty dried orange garland is a simple project that anyone can make. This would look stunning just about anywhere—but make sure to keep it out of reach of your cats as citrus is toxic to them!
Which of these Fall Equinox and Mabon DIY Projects will you try?
While these DIYs are perfect for the fall equinox and Mabon, they’re also just beautiful fall crafts more generally. So whether you’re honoring the season change, or just looking for some stunning autumn DIY projects, this list has lots of options for you.
