In recent years I’ve found myself drawn to pins. Particularly ones that have a little bit of attitude and sass. I’ve found, however, that I don’t really have a lot of places where I can display them. I don’t carry a backpack (at least not often), and although I have some space on the strap of my purse that’s about it.
But as my pins are more for my own enjoyment anyway, I don’t mind having them simply on display in my apartment. This is why I made myself a pennant banner pin holder; it’s cute, it’s small, and it looks great on the bulletin board by my desk.
If you’re looking for a simple but cute way to display your own pin collection, this might be the answer you’ve been searching for.
These little banners are adorable and super easy to make. I prefer them with canvas, but you could use almost any scrap fabric you already have lying around.

Okay, got your pattern? Great! Are you ready to make a cute pennant banner pin holder? Of course you are. So let’s dive in!
How to Make a DIY Pennant Banner Pin Holder
Supplies
- Fabric: I prefer a loosely woven canvas because attaching pins (and moving them around later to make room for more) won’t damage it. However, you can use whatever fabric you’d like. One fat quarter of fabric could make 2 to 3 of these little banners if you use the pattern provided. If you’re ordering your supplies on Amazon, I’d recommend this lightweight cotton canvas.
- Wooden Dowel: It should be about 6 inches long. I picked up a pack from Dollar Tree that was already the perfect size, but if you can only find the longer ones you can just cut it down. If you can’t find them locally, this package of wooden dowels would be perfect.
- String: You can use twine, embroidery thread, macrame string, or whatever you’d prefer. I’m using a simple cotton thread that I picked up at the dollar store ages ago. You’ll need about 15 inches. If you’re shopping online, this crochet is similar to what I used.
- Sewing machine and a thread that matches your fabric. (In the market for a new sewing machine? this is the Brother machine I have and I love it!)
Directions
Step 1
Assemble your materials and cut out your pattern.
Step 2
Trace the pattern onto your fabric and cut out two pieces.
Step 3
Put the two pieces front to front and sew around the banner with an ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave about an inch at the top so that you can turn the banner right side out.
Step 4
Snip the corners, and trim down any bulk. Then turn your banner right side out. Iron it flat.
Step 5
Top stitch around the banner, fairly close to the edge. Mine is less than a ¼ inch.
Step 6
Now that it’s all closed up, fold down the top about one inch. Stitch it down. You’ve now created a little channel for the wooden dowel to slide through.
Step 7
Now that the fabric part is done, get your wooden dowel. If yours is too long and you haven’t already trimmed it down to 6 inches, do that now. Make sure to sand the edge you cut so it’s smooth.
Slide the dowel through the channel you’ve created. We’re almost done!
Step 8
All that’s left is to attach your string so the banner can hang.
Cut your string to 15″. Tie one end of the string to one side of the dowel, and the other side of the string to the other side of the dowel. I made a double knot on either side.
Step 9
And that’s it! You now have a cute little banner for placing the pins you’ve collected and/or made!
If you don’t love the look of plain canvas, you can decorate it with fabric paint, acrylic paint, and even sharpies! (I did a mix of acrylic paint and sharpies on the decorated pin holder below!)
Will you make a pennant banner pin holder to display your pin collection?
I love quick and easy crafts like these because they make great starting points for creative exploration. Why stop at one? Make them in different colors and color-coordinate your pin collection. Or organize them by theme or type of pin! Or just add them haphazardly like I do!
They’re also adorable little gift add-ons if you’re gifting a pin to someone, or are trying to come up with a small little “just because” gift for someone in your life who already collects pins.
Of course, these pennant banner pin holders don’t have to be used for pin display! Paint them, embroider them, or string a bunch together to make a long banner for parties or general home décor.
