Love earrings? Trying to come up with a cute Valentine’s Day gift for someone who does? Then this might be what you’ve been looking for!
These quick, easy, and incredibly customizable earrings can be made with any colors, and in any shape. I’m opting for pinks and hearts to make something Valentine-themed, but the sky is the limit. Plus, the beauty of polymer clay is that you can easily mix up unique colors by combining the generic ones available at your local craft store. If you mix up your own colors and get creative with how you combine them, the recipient of your earrings will be the only one in the world with that exact pair.
To make these cute heart earrings, you’ll need:
- Polymer Clay: I love working with Sculpey, but you can use any polymer clay that you like best! You could also use air dry clay, but then you can’t wrap this project up in one afternoon.
- Polymer Clay Glaze or UV Resin: When I use glaze, I use the Sculpey Gloss Glaze (like this). On this project, however, I opted to try UV Resin. I’m using Blue Moon Studio’s Hard UV Resin (check it out here). If you’re using UV Resin, you’ll also need a UV light. I’m also using the Blue Moon Studio UV light.
- Jewelry Findings: You’ll need eye pins/head pins (like this), jump rings (like this), and earring posts (like this).
Directions
Step 1
Gather your supplies! I used two shades of pink, both of which I mixed with a little glittery white. I also used a glittery gray (not pictured here) to add a bit more variety to the mix.
Step 2
Cut up your clay into little pieces, and then squish them together but not so much that they blend together. You want to make sure the clay is all connected. Some blending is okay, around the edges. I rolled it into a tube, and then made it a little more square by pushing each side down against the tile that I worked on.
Step 3
Now cut the clay log into even pieces. I made my pieces about 2 cm thick.
Step 4
Lay out your pieces so that you make a long, marbled sheet. Once you like the layout, roll it out so all the individual pieces are attached and it’s one consistent thickness throughout.
Step 5
Once you’ve got a nice even sheet, use a cutter to cut out whatever shapes you want. In this case, I went with hearts.
Step 6
Pull the extra clay away to leave your cut pieces. Then add head pins to wherever you’ll want them in the finished product. You don’t have to insert it far; maybe about a quarter of the way into the charm. Leave the headpin in place while you bake your clay.
Bake your clay pieces according to the instructions on the package. When they’re done, let them cool. You can sand off any rough edges if you want.
Step 7
Once your hearts are cooled and sanded, pull out the headpins, trim them down, and add a little glue before re-inserting them so they fit flush against the charm.
Now apply the UV resin! Follow the package instructions. You don’t need much.
Step 8
Cure the resin! Once again, follow the package instructions. I cured it longer than “needed” because I wanted to make sure it was well set.
Step 9
Attach your hardware and you’re good to go! One-of-a-kind marbled heart earrings.
